The Daily Mail reports today that divorces are at a 40 year low as couples cannot afford to divorce.

What the study by martial dating website illicit encounters does not say, is why couples cannot afford to divorce in 2011 as opposed to 2010.

It cannot be the price of a divorce as online divorce services have been undercutting the high street for 10 years now.

It is the inability to sell or transfer property that is stopping people getting divorced and we receive many calls every day from people who either can’t sell their property or the other spouse cannot get a mortgage to effect a buy out.

Divorce and the property market are inextricably linked and until the property market begins to move and we hear more good news than bad from the media, this stagnation in the number of divorces with continue. However it does mean in our view that once the economy recovers there will unfortunately ( fortunately for us) be a boom in divorce.
