Bigamist didn’t tell new wife he was married….too scared more like

A very naughty married man lied that he was divorced because he didn’t want to cancel his fairytale wedding at a top Scottish hotel because he was more than likely too scared to tell his intended he was married to another.

George McAdam, 43, tied the knot at the Glenskirlie Hotel, Stirlingshire, in 2009, after telling bride-to-be Caroline Wilson his divorce had been finalised.

McAdam was unmasked as a bigamist within months, when a registrar’s clerk found two records showing he was married and there was no divorce in place.

Falkirk Sheriff Court heard that although his  new wife Caroline found the bigamy “hard to come to terms with”, she had forgiven him and they still live together with their five-year-old daughter in Motherwell.

McAdam separated from his first wife in 2002 and got engaged to his second wife in 2004.

McAdam, of Carfin, Motherwell, pleaded guilty to marrying bigamously and fraudulently endorsing a marriage schedule saying that he was single, while knowing that he was already married.

Defence solicitor Murray Aitken said McAdam had pushed on with the wedding because he “didn’t want to let his partner down”.

Sheriff Thomas McCartney fined McAdam £500 and told him he would need to carry out 160 hours of community service.

The lesson to be learnt here is that no matter how scary the missus is, if it means a criminal record could be the result, tell her the truth.
