The Mediation ProcessThis information is provided to explain some important aspects of Family Mediation generally and may differ from service to service. When should I use the service? At any time, but ideally as soon as possible after a decision to separate has been reached by you and your partner. If, however, you have been living apart for some time, it is not too late. Arrangements for the children can be made at any time, and in many cases they need to change as you (and they) adjust to the new situation. Where will I be seen?Usually you will be seen at the Mediation service offices in a relaxed and friendly environment. How does it work?First of all, you and your ex-partner will separately meet one of the mediators who will explain more about family mediation. At the same time, this gives them the opportunity to hear from you about your concerns. If you do decide that mediation is right for you, they arrange for your and your ex-partner to meet one or two mediators. The mediators assist you in making decisions that involve your children, such as access or contact arrangements. If you wish, they can pass any practical decisions to your solicitor if you have one. However, please remember mediation can only work if both partners are willing to negotiate. In extreme circumstances other arrangements can be discussed. Is the service confidential? The mediator will not discuss the content of your interview with anyone outside the service without the agreement of both parties. A clear exception to this is where a child is believed to be at risk of harm. Will the children be seen?Mediation work son the basis that parents are the people who make important decisions about their children's lives, and if parents can agree amicably, then children can be more comfortable with any decisions made. However, it is possible that some children also need to express their worries, fears and views with an independent adult. In this case you should encourage your child to do so. A mediator will only see children if both parents give their permission and where there is a real intention to resolve their concerns. they do not ask that children decide in favor of one parent or the other.. What if our arrangements break down - can we come back? Usually If you wish to use the service again you can do so, however you will need to check the cost. The Court said that I should come here - what does this mean? The appointment may take place at Court or at the mediators offices.
