The Role of Solicitors

Solicitors will do most of the work in any divorce case, from advising you as to the prospects of success, to fielding phone calls, writing letters, preparing the documents and attending the court on procedural and actual hearings.

A solicitor is not a Social worker or counselor but is often used as one by their clients and often have a heavy burden to bear when things go wrong or do not turn out as they hoped.

They are only human and this is a job that finishes when they go home.

That said most family law solicitors actually care about their clients and families and the law that is involved. They are often paid a great deal less than their counterparts in other areas of law and work long hours, so please remember this when you feel like screaming at them for not answering your phone call.

We have produced a list of handy hints to help you and your solicitor save time and money .

  • Keep a diary or organiser.
  • Only phone when necessary.
  • Do not write massive letters, attach a statement.
  • Speak to the secretary wherever possible for routine questions.
  • Any non legal research or evidence gathering should be done by you.
  • If you can't keep an appointment let them know early.
  • Check your bill once a month to avoid a surprise.
