Contact and Statistics

750,000 children have no contact with their fathers. However 48% of children affected by parental separation see their fathers at least once a week, (December 1999 figures).

This contrasts with 1991 figures which state that over half (57%) of all absent parents had contact with their children. Only just over a third of the children of lone parents (ie never married) had contact with their father. The proportion having contact tended to decline with the length of lone parenthood and was lower for male than female absent parents.

Approximately 19,000 children used contact centres in 1998 and in 1998 there were 65,628 applications for contact orders in all tiers of court in England & Wales.

Contact orders made in private law proceedings rose by 17% from 1997.
